Playgroup

Pen-y-ffordd and Fynnongroyw childcare is a small, friendly village group based in the premises of the Primary School.  Regular inspections are carried out by CIW (Care Inspectorate Wales).  Pen-y-ffordd and Fynnongroyw childcare is a member of the Early years Wales Association and is a registered charity.

In order for both you and your child to make the most of the playgroup, we hope it will be helpful to know a little more about us and gain a better insight into what we do.  

The group has been established since 2021 and registered as a CIO in 2021. We aim to provide imaginative, creative, physical and exploratory play opportunities for the pre-school child in a safe, friendly and caring environment. The setting is registered for 20 children.  

We believe that through play children begin to learn and experience social interaction and develop their group skills. We aim to encourage each child’s development by providing a wide and varying range of stimulating activities.

For many children playgroup is their first independent experience, and it is important to be aware of this. You may notice little things like hearing a rhyme or song which you realise your child has not learnt from you.  We therefore take great care to ensure children feel secure and happy to be there and we welcome your assistance by providing us with as much information as possible and sharing any worries or positive/negative feelings concerning your child. 

Playgroup is exactly what it says “play” and learning through play forms the whole ethos of our group.  An informal and less structured approach makes playgroup distinct from the nursery environment and gently introduces children to new experiences through something they are familiar with – play.  During every session all activities are planned through the seven areas of learning, PERSONAL AND SOCIAL, PHYSICAL, LANGUAGE AND LITERACY, WELSH LANGUAGE, CREATIVE, KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE WORLD AND MATHEMATICS, to develop your child’s skills. English is the language used throughout the playgroup session although some basic Welsh is used to prepare children for Nursery as well as Makaton.

Our sessions are Monday to Thursday afternoons during school term time, from 11.30am to 3.00 pm and flying start 12.30-3pm for flying start. Children who attend the nursery class at Ysgol Bryn Garth can also come straight through to playgroup. Children will need to be provided with a packed lunch or order and pay for a school meal via the school gateway.
